GIG REVIEW: CSS

CSS
Great Escape, 2007

Review By Zarina Raja

CSS exploded on to the MTV2 stage with a throbbing mass of disco-pop-electro-rock and most definitely exceeded everybody’s towering expectations.

Lovefoxxx, the lead singer in CSS, looked as effortlessly cool as ever as she jigged around the stage in a loose t-shirt and tight trousers, drizzling each song with a sexy Brazilian slur as the audience surrendered themselves to a band that is undoubtedly one of the hottest female led bands around.

She flirted with their fans by incorporating lyrics such as ‘To all the ladies in Brighton that want to kiss music’ and ‘Let's each chips and listen to Hot Chip.’

CSS are immediately likeable due to their trendy yet non pretentious image, fun and funky music and almost innocent but cheeky nature. The name ‘Consei de ser sexy’ (meaning ‘I’m tired of being sexy’ which is apparently a blasé remark made by Beyonce) encapsulates the mischievous essence of CSS apparent in songs such as Meeting Paris Hilton and Art Bitch.

However, CSS proved at the Concorde 2 that although they are intent on having a damn good time with their music, they are all gifted musicians who know how to be incredibly creative with words and sounds, smudging the lines between musical genres.

CSS are a God send to any one into female bands as they are unique, feisty and obsessed by music. ‘Music is my hot sex’ thrusts this message to their fans through lyrics such as ‘From all the boys-all I want to take home is music’

CSS have swaggered into the current back lash against the male dominated music scene with other bands such as The Gossip, Robots In Disguise, Metric, New Young Pony Club and The Noisettes, fitting into something which could be called the modern riot girl movement. After having drenched the audience with their trashy-poppy-punk set they managed to slip in a cover of ‘Pretend we were dead’ by one of the leading riot girl bands of the 90s, L7.

Finishing with ‘Lets Make Love’ the mood was sweaty, chaotic and hyper- active. A blur of flashing lights, noise and movement took over the venue as everyone completely lost themselves in the song, an awesome way to kick off The Great Escape festival.
